Humeral Shaft Fractures
A humeral shaft fracture is a break through the middle of the upper arm bone. Many heal in a specialised functional brace. The radial nerve runs close to the bone, so wrist or finger weakness may occasionally occur after the injury.
Common causes and risk factors
• A fall or direct blow
• Road traffic or sporting injury
• A twisting injury
• Weak bone from osteoporosis or disease

• Upper-arm pain and swelling
• Bruising, shortening or deformity
• Difficulty using the arm
• Wrist or finger weakness if the radial nerve is affected
How is it diagnosed?
X-rays show the fracture. The clinician repeatedly checks the radial nerve and circulation. Further imaging may be needed if the fracture is caused by abnormal bone or healing is delayed.
Treatment options
Many closed fractures are managed with a temporary splint followed by a functional brace and regular X-rays. Surgery may be recommended for open fractures, vascular injury, multiple injuries, unacceptable alignment or failure to heal.

• Severe deformity

• Persistent movement and pain at the fracture site

Can a crooked-looking arm heal without surgery?
The bone should still heal and some angulation is well tolerated because the shoulder and elbow compensate, but alignment must remain within acceptable limits.

Many nerve injuries associated with closed fractures recover naturally, but they require monitoring.

Healing often takes several months and varies with fracture pattern and health factors.
